MASTERING THE FEAR MIND
With headlines reminding us of war and the looming threat of terrorism, we find an increasing need to recognize and master the part of our mind that generates and perpetuates fear. It is important that we identify this fear mind, and not identify with it. Just so that you know what I mean by fear mind, it's the part of your thinking that points out problems, limitations, risks, and possible negative outcomes. This is only a handicap if it dominates our entire consciousness and governs our emotions and behavior. It has a place, and we would be in trouble without an awareness of potential threats and difficulties. When we let it take over, however, it becomes a tyrant that keeps us in fear all of the time. Here's an exercise you may find helpful. The first step is to honor the fear mind for its effort to keep you safe, which is its purpose and proper function. Write down its thoughts and predictions, and then thank it for its help. The next step is to activate the part of your mind that is aware of what is right and good in your life and in the world. Practice an attitude of gratitude. Stretch your imagination to see yourself from the viewpoint of someone who loves you, or someone who sees you as blessed and fortunate. Look for the beauty that surrounds you in each moment. This is a pathway to greater peace. Notice your body relaxing as it remembers the goodness that is right now. We are creating our world, moment by moment, thought by thought. Our world is calling us to see its beauty, and its up to us to answer.
