The Art of Appreciation
When you practice the art of appreciation, you are connecting with who you really are. As testimony to this, when you're in appreciation mode, your heart works better and you are more optimistic. Research has shown us that optimism makes you healthier and smarter. In the business world, when something appreciates it increases in value. When you appreciate, you increase your own value and the value of what or whoever you are appreciating. This entire newsletter is devoted to this topic, so enjoy! By the way, the watercolor art to your right is from Heron Dance, and I highly recommend you check out their web site for more beautiful art to appreciate!

"Head To Toe" Appreciation Process
Try this exercise at home! Take some time each day for appreciation. Sit in a comfortable place, relax, and write about what you appreciate about your self. Starting with the top of your head, write about your appreciation and gratitude for your hair, your scalp and your skin moving right on down to your ears, eyes, nose and mouth. Write about how much you appreciate being able to hear birdsongs, children laughing, the voice of your loved ones, rainfall and so much more. Write about how you appreciate being able to smell your favorite aromas, and how those certain fragrances can literally fill you up from inside. Write about the beauty you are able to see because of your eyes. Write about how grateful you are that you can see a sunset, beautiful works of art, and the eyes of those who love you. I think you get the idea...let's continue.

More On The Appreciation Journey
Write about how much you appreciate being able to speak, to sing, and to give voice to your musings. Be grateful for the freedom to say what's on your mind, and for the power and grace of language to communicate your heart's desire. Think of the joy of laughter that rolls from within you, and your ability to say the words, "I love you" and the blessing of having someone to say them to. Appreciate the ability to taste and savor those flavors that you love.
Now move on to your arms, shoulders and hands. Write about how much you appreciate being able to grasp, hold, lift and move objects at will. Be grateful for the ability to drive a car, plant flowers, write letters and type on a computer key pad. Just think for a moment, all of the things your hands do for you in a given hour, morning, day, week or month. Think of how much you would miss that ability if it were gone--and use that emotion to empower your appreciation even more. Keep going with this to the tip of your toes, then start over!

Appreciate Your Loved Ones
Take some time and write about each friend and family member, one by one, focusing only on what you admire, respect, love and appreciate about them. Think of their good heart, the moments when their defenses were down and you could see who they really are. Use this opportunity to see the best in them. If their not-so-wonderful side keeps creeping in, acknowledge it and picture it off to the side, and keep writing about what you appreciate. When you run out of things to write, move on to the next person.
When you do this simple exercise, you will improve your heart function (see the graph in this newsletter), and raise the value of your relationship with the person you are writing about. Don't wait until your loved ones are gone to do this--do it now. Then, if you've really got guts, send it to them, tell them on the phone, or best of all, tell them face-to-face. We could go on and on in this appreciation process, but I think you get the idea.
